Heavy industrial machinery installation for a new Cranbourne West facility.

Electrical and mechanical installation support for coil processing equipment, production line infrastructure, controls, safety systems and commissioning.

A new industrial facility in Cranbourne West required a major electrical and mechanical installation package to support heavy coil processing equipment, production line infrastructure and ongoing site operation.

The works involved the installation and support of multiple pieces of heavy industrial machinery, including slitting line equipment, cut-to-length line equipment, coil handling equipment, uncoiler/decoiler and recoiler equipment, conveyors, control cabinets, MCCs, safety systems, lighting, data cabling and general factory electrical infrastructure.

The project required coordination between local site teams, overseas machinery suppliers, commissioning technicians and industrial trades. The scope moved from initial factory fit-out and machine installation through to commissioning, production support, safety upgrades and follow-up improvement works.

The challenge

The site was being established as a new production facility, which meant the installation needed to bring together factory services, heavy machinery, imported production equipment, controls infrastructure and safety systems in a coordinated way.

The machinery package included multiple large items that needed to be unloaded, positioned, levelled, aligned, mechanically secured, wired, connected and commissioned. The works also needed to account for trenches, cable routes, machine guarding, production access, supplier requirements and the practical realities of installing heavy industrial equipment inside an active project environment.

Because the machinery was supplied with input from overseas equipment providers, the installation required clear site coordination, practical problem solving and support during commissioning as equipment was progressively brought into operation.

The approach

The project was delivered in stages, beginning with site preparation, factory electrical fit-out and installation of power and data infrastructure. This included unistrut, cable tray, 56 series outlets, GPOs, data outlets, temporary supplies, distribution boards and cabling across the new facility.

As machinery arrived on site, the works progressed into mechanical installation, machine positioning, levelling, rail installation, conveyor positioning, cabinet placement, MCC installation, field wiring and controls cabling. Cable trenches were cleaned and prepared, segregation barriers were installed, and cable tray and containment were fitted to suit the final machine layout.

Once major equipment was in place, the works moved into machine connection, commissioning support, safety system installation and production support. This included assistance with sensors, proxies, light curtains, E-stops, gate switches, control cabinets, PLC-related support, production cameras, remote panels and ongoing rectification works as the lines were tested and brought into service.

The electrical scope covered both general factory infrastructure and machinery-specific installation works.

Mechanical installation support

The mechanical installation works involved practical support for the placement, alignment and installation of heavy machinery and production line components.

  • Drilling, chem-setting and securing machinery bases
  • Positioning and levelling equipment to suit production requirements
  • Installing and setting rail tracks, conveyors and machine components

Controls, commissioning and supplier coordination

The project required close coordination between site trades, machinery suppliers and commissioning personnel. As equipment was installed, the work shifted into practical controls and commissioning support, including cabling checks, sensor installation, proxy adjustments, control cabinet works and production line testing.

Support was provided across slitting line and cut-to-length line equipment, including remote control panels, pump panels, MCC works, machine-mounted devices, safety circuits, production cameras and line-specific adjustments requested during commissioning.

This type of project requires a practical understanding of both electrical installation and industrial machinery. It is not just about running cables; it is about making sure the installed infrastructure supports the equipment, the commissioning process and the production team that will operate the line.

Safety systems and guarding works

As the site moved toward production, safety-related works became an important part of the ongoing installation and improvement program. The works included installation and support for guarding, fencing, light curtains, reset switches, gate switches, E-stop lanyards, safety zones and associated wiring.

Safety-related installation and modification works need to be planned carefully around equipment operation, site risk controls, machine requirements and responsible parties. For this project, the electrical and mechanical installation works supported the practical implementation of safety devices and guarding infrastructure across production areas.

Ongoing production support

After the major installation works, the site continued to require production support as equipment was tested, operated, adjusted and improved. This included fault finding, sensor changes, wiring modifications, light curtain adjustments, PLC-related support, safety zone works, camera installation, control cabinet works and general production line support.

Ongoing support of this nature is common on major machinery installations. Once equipment is running in a real production environment, practical issues can appear that need to be resolved quickly and safely to keep the site moving.

The outcome

The completed works helped establish a new industrial production facility with the electrical infrastructure, machinery installation support, controls cabling, safety systems and production support needed to bring heavy coil processing equipment into operation.
